Chelsea Smash Transfer Record with £117m Morgan Rogers Deal
Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117 million deal to sign Aston Villa and England midfielder Morgan Rogers. The 23-year-old is expected to complete his medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract, with the option of an additional year.
The agreement ends weeks of speculation surrounding Rogers' future and represents a major statement from new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. It also breaks the British transfer record set earlier this summer and makes Rogers the most expensive signing in Chelsea's history.
Chelsea win race for England star
Chelsea moved quickly to secure Rogers after England's World Cup campaign, beating Arsenal to one of their priority targets. While Arsenal maintained long-term interest, they were unwilling to match Aston Villa's valuation.
Rogers preferred a move to Stamford Bridge despite Chelsea missing out on European football last season. The attacking midfielder will undergo a medical after returning from international duty before completing the transfer early next week.
The £117 million package surpasses the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. It also eclipses Chelsea's previous club-record signing, overtaking the £107 million spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Remarkable rise at Aston Villa
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal initially worth £8 million, potentially rising to £15 million. He quickly developed into one of Unai Emery's most influential attacking players.
Across his Villa career, Rogers scored 31 goals and registered 29 assists in 125 appearances. Last season alone, he contributed 14 goals and 11 assists in 55 matches across all competitions. He also played a decisive role in Villa's Europa League triumph. Rogers assisted the opening goal and scored in the 3-0 final victory over Freiburg, helping the club lift its first major European trophy since 1982.
Numbers behind his breakthrough
Rogers also enjoyed an impressive individual campaign in domestic football. He scored 10 Premier League goals and established himself as one of England's brightest attacking talents. His development earned him regular international opportunities. Rogers has collected 22 England caps and featured in seven matches during the 2026 World Cup.
He started the semi-final defeat against Argentina and provided the assist for Anthony Gordon's goal. His performances throughout the tournament further strengthened Chelsea's determination to complete the transfer.
What Chelsea gain
Chelsea view Rogers as a versatile attacker capable of operating as a winger or attacking midfielder. His arrival gives Alonso another high-quality creative option alongside Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens.
The move also reunites Rogers with Palmer after the pair progressed through Manchester City's academy together. Their close friendship and understanding could provide Chelsea with another attacking advantage.
Villa, meanwhile, are expected to receive a huge financial return on a player signed just two and a half years ago. Middlesbrough will also benefit significantly through a 20% sell-on clause, earning more than £20 million from the transfer.
A landmark move for both clubs
Chelsea have underlined their intent by committing a record fee for one of England's brightest young stars. Rogers arrives with proven Premier League quality and considerable room for further development.
For Aston Villa, the transfer represents another painful departure during a summer of major squad changes. Despite the financial reward, replacing one of their standout performers will be a significant challenge.
What's next?
Rogers is expected to complete his Chelsea medical on Monday before signing his long-term contract. Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign away to Fulham on August 24. Aston Villa continue rebuilding after losing Rogers and Youri Tielemans, with Johan Manzambi already arriving and Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes among their reported transfer targets.
